The initial membership of the Constituent Assembly was 389. Since a separate Constituent Assembly was set up for Pakistan, representatives of some Provinces ceased to be members of the Assembly thereby reducing the membership of Indian Constituent Assembly to 299.
The Constitution of India was adopted on 26 November, 1949 and the members appended their signatures on 24 January, 1950. In all, 284 members only signed the Constitution.
